How to Play Ranked Battles and Win
As a medium to good tanker, I have decidedly mixed feelings about the new Ranked Battle mode in World of Tanks.
On the upside, I think the mode gives you a fantastic way to complete at high levels.
On the down side, the game mode takes an immense amount of time, and you absolutely bleed credits. So, unless you are a very good player, this mode may prove more frustrating than fulfilling.
Finally, there is the controversy over the bonds you win, and how these can be used to buy Improved Equipment and so on. The problem is, you pretty much have to be a Unicum to earn a large number of bonds, so the already dominant players will earn far more rewards such as improved Vert Stabs or Gun Rammers than the non-Unicum players.
Do you really want to give Unicums an advantage over everyone else in the game?
I have not played the Ranked Battles yet, mainly because I’ve been grinding my Tier X tanks and I’m pretty much flat broke!
But I have been watching the development of Ranked Battles with interest, and particularly some of the videos by Quickybaby that show how to succeed in these contests featuring high level players.
The video featured in this article is a good example. A lot of the players are Unicums, and even Quickybaby himself does not really stand out among this crowd. I can imagine a player like me would be evaporated about 30 seconds in.
But, if you are interested in playing Ranked Battles, I highly recommend you watch this video.
On the overall topic of Ranked Battles, I do think WG is at risk of having another failed game mode. If the mode is so expensive to play that even Unicums can’t earn credits, the non-Unicums will stay away in droves because the credits they lose won’t be compensated by the bonds they can win.
As well, with no separation between skill levels, anyone who is not at least a dark green player would have no chance whatsoever of advancing and earning the Chevrons you need to earn the Improved Equipment.
And finally, I do think WG should get rid of that idea of Improved Equipment altogether. Over time it will create a very uneven playing field, and I think will create some resentment among the majority of the player base.
All that said, I really like the idea of this game mode, and I hope WG makes a few small changes to make it more accessible to more players.
