Why Pay2Win is Increasing in World of Tanks
You see it every day on the forums; complaints about gold ammo spamming, or alternatively, the cost of spamming gold.
It’s pretty obvious, and in fact Wargaming has said so openly many times, that the game has gone to a meta where armour matters a lot more … and that means to get through that armour you often have to roll with gold.
For a lot of people, like me, that’s just unaffordable without a Premium account, and even then it’s difficult to stay ahead on credits.
I ran into the excellent video below discussing the change in the meta, by Aging Jedi, and wanted to share it with everyone.

So, what has WG done to make premium ammo more desirable?
Basically, four changes to maps and games that make gold ammo spam almost unavoidable.
- Corridor maps like the revised Sacred Valley. If you face heavies head on at a pinch point, you pretty much have to use gold to pen.
- More armour on heavies and assault TDs. This one’s pretty obvious, but it also includes the fact there are far fewer weak points, so just aiming more carefully doesn’t cut it anymore. Also, at this point, gold ammo is less reliable, so you bounce a lot of that expensive ammo and have to buy more.
- You’re seeing increased turret armour on a lot of non-heavy tanks. For example, my T-54 and Obj. 140 were buffed specifically for increased turret armour, and both are now very difficult to pen when hull down.
- Along with three, many tanks are enjoying better gun depression. For example, if you’re trying to go through the turret of a hull down Super Conq, well, good luck with that. Unless you flank all you’ll see is the turret, and that’s going to take gold to pen … if you’re lucky!
I’m posting a poll on the WoT forum, NA, about the increased use of gold ammo, and I’ll post the results here.
